¹⁰ They cried to the Lord and said, “We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord. We have served the Baals and the Ashtartes, but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.” ¹¹ So the Lord sent Jerubbaal,^[a] Bedan,^[b] Jephthah, and Samuel, and he delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and you lived in safety.

¹² But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was coming against you, even though the Lord your God was your king, you said to me, “No, we want a king to reign over us.”
